Scanning the Void: Modern Tech vs. Ancient Stone

While the exterior of the Great Pyramid is well-documented, its interior remains one of archaeology's greatest final frontiers. In 2017, the world was stunned by the announcement from the "ScanPyramids" mission: the discovery of a "Big Void" at least 30 meters long, located directly above the Grand Gallery. This discovery was made using muon radiography, a technique that tracks subatomic particles called muons that pass through solid matter.

What Lies Inside?

The purpose of this massive void remains a subject of intense debate. Some believe it is a structural architectural feature designed to relieve the weight of the masonry above the Grand Gallery—much like the "relieving chambers" above the King's Chamber. Others speculate it could be a hidden suite of rooms containing the original, untouched funerary equipment of Khufu. Because the mission uses non-invasive technology, we cannot simply drill a hole to see inside, leaving the mystery tantalizingly out of reach.

The 2023 Breakthrough

Just recently, the team confirmed the existence of a smaller, nine-meter-long corridor located behind the original northern entrance. High-resolution cosmic-ray imaging allowed researchers to pinpoint its location and eventually insert a tiny "endoscope" camera through a micro-hole. The resulting images showed a pristine, empty corridor with a gabled roof, providing even more clues about the internal stress-distribution techniques used by Old Kingdom architects.
