How did the Egyptians cut through solid rose granite, one of the hardest stones on Earth, using only copper tools? Modern experiments have shown that copper saws used in conjunction with a "slurry" of quartz sand can slowly but effectively grind through stone. The copper serves as the guide, while the hard sand does the actual cutting.
